Helping teens build a healthier relationship with social media

Monday September 28, 2026

12pm PDT | 1pm MDT | 3pm EDT

Social media is part of growing up today. It can offer connection, creativity, community and opportunities to learn, but it can also affect how young people sleep, think, feel and see themselves.

Adolescence is also a unique stage of brain development. The parts of the brain involved in rewards, emotions, and social feedback develop earlier than areas responsible for planning, impulse control, and emotional regulation. That can make peer approval, notifications, likes, and online comparison especially powerful during the teen years.

Join Julie Junkin, Nurse Practitioner, with Katrina Onysko, Mental Health Care Navigator, for a practical discussion about social media, adolescent health, and what families can do together to encourage healthier digital habits.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

  • How social media can affect adolescent mental, emotional, and physical health, and how those impacts can differ by gender.
  • How online experiences and pressures can affect each teen differently.
  • Signs that social media may be interfering with healthy routines and well-being.
  • Practical ways to set boundaries around phones, privacy, bedrooms, meals, and screen time while keeping communication open.
  • How to replace some screen time with movement, connection, and meaningful activities, while modelling healthier technology habits.

The goal isn’t to suggest that all social media is bad, remove cell phones, or apply the same rules to every young person. It’s to better understand the role technology is playing in their lives and give families practical tools to find a healthy balance.

A Zoom link will be emailed to you one day before the webinar.
