At 75 years old, Michael’s life is anything but sedentary. Between running, golfing, and playing tennis, he lives with the energy and passion of someone decades younger. But just a few years ago, Michael faced a turning point—one that could have disrupted his vibrant lifestyle. Instead, it became the start of something meaningful, thanks to Harrison Healthcare.
“Losing my doctor of over 30 years was unexpected,” Michael recalls. “He knew my entire medical history, and I trusted him completely.” Michael was left scrambling to find a new provider. After a recommendation from a friend, he decided to give Harrison a try.
A New Beginning: The Harrison Healthcare Difference
From the moment Michael walked through the doors, he knew this wasn’t just another clinic. “The professionalism, the welcoming environment, and the personalized approach—it was unlike anything I’d experienced before.” he says.
Michael was introduced to Dr. Siddiqui, a physician who went above and beyond to make him feel cared for. “Dr. Siddiqui came into the clinic on a holiday just to carefully review my medical history,” says Michael. As a former corporate professional, he found this level of professionalism impressive. “The dedication that first interaction showed was incredible. It set the tone for the relationship we’ve built since then.”
Proactive Care That Makes a Difference
When Michael joined Harrison, his primary focus wasn’t on setting specific health goals but on preserving his overall quality of life. His team has done this and more.
His team began by establishing new health baselines through comprehensive tests and a referral for several diagnostic tests, including ultrasound, ECG, and a nuclear perfusion scan. “It wasn’t just about responding to issues—it was about staying ahead of them,” Michael explains.
This proactive approach proved invaluable. Although Michael was already aware that he had arterial plaque, to his great relief the additional diagnostics confirmed that the plaque was not causing any blockages.
The team also uncovered signs of prediabetes, a precursor to type 2 diabetes. “I have a sweet tooth, so this was just the push I needed to cut back,” Michael recalls.
Michael was a good candidate for Metformin, a prescription medication that helps to regulate blood sugar. Instead, he chose to forgo medication for 6 months to see if he could make improvements to his metabolic and cardiovascular health with diet and exercise alone.
“My team worked with me to focus on diet, exercise, and monitoring. It was practical, effective, and tailored to me.”
For Michael, this care meant better health. Within six months, his blood sugar levels improved significantly—without the need for medication.
Convenient Team-Based Support for Total Health
What truly set Harrison apart, Michael notes, is having a multidisciplinary care team all in the same location, working together. From dietitians to exercise physiologists, the on-site lab and extended team collaborated seamlessly and conveniently.
“Sure, I could piece together these services on my own, but having everything in one place is just so much more convenient. I can get tests done when I need them, meet with my Dietitian regularly, and see my doctor as often as I need—all without the hassle and wait times,” says Michael.
“I have worked with Michael to lower his A1c (a blood sugar measurement) over the past couple of years. He came to me with an excellent nutritional base, so we focused on managing carbohydrate intake. We also discussed new and delicious recipes to try himself,” says Registered Dietitian, Michelle Ross.
By taking an 80/20 approach to diet—focusing on healthy eating while allowing room for occasional indulgences—Michael has found a balance that works for him. “It’s realistic and sustainable,” he says. He reduced his alcohol consumption to a moderate level—no hard liquor, and wine enjoyed solely for its flavour, rather than the effects of the alcohol.
By embracing small, sustainable changes and leaning on his team’s support, he reshaped his diet and healed from injuries that previously held him back from being as active as he desired.
“Michael and I worked together to address his musculoskeletal concerns, including tears, and he’s been dedicated to improving his physical health. Through a consistent routine, he’s back to yoga and golfing, staying active and strong,” adds Exercise Physiologist, JP Willner.
Running, a passion Michael picked up at age 50, remains a core part of his routine. “For me, running isn’t only about fitness—it’s meditative and tranquil,” he says. “Harrison helped me stay on track so I can keep doing what I enjoy for as long as I’m able.”
Living Boldly, Without Fear
Today, Michael’s focus is on longevity and living well. “At my age, time and health are precious,” he reflects. “With Harrison, I have the peace of mind that allows me to just live and know my health is taken care of.”
Your Health, Your Partner
Michael’s story shows that great healthcare isn’t just about solving problems—it’s about unlocking potential. Michael came to Harrison fairly healthy and motivated, but the personalized, proactive, and team-based approach helped him push further. With the support of his Care Team, he uncovered new ways to optimize his well-being, proving that empowering healthcare enables you to live boldly at any age.
